THE DEPARTMENT of Education in Davao Region directed all schools
to follow the 4 o’clock habit to clean their surroundings and arrest
the spread of dengue and malaria. Genelito Atillo, spokesperson of DepEd-XI, said their latest assessment showed that no school has reported of being dwelling places for mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus. “We are confident that the clean up drives in schools are working so far,” Atillo said, adding they have not been remiss in their duty to remind the school principals on the 4 o’clock habit. Atillo disclosed that the DepEd is giving much attention in schools in Barangay Gumitan in Paquibato District following the outbreak of malaria in the area, which claimed the life of one of the public school teachers there. Government doctors and nurses are now in the area to check the health conditions of the pupils, teachers and even the communities in the area, Atillo said. He lamented that the distance of Marilog and Paquibato to the nearest medical facilities is always a great concern.
